Incorrect Names or Connective ("and" or "or"):
I Bonds don’t need to be reissued to correct minor "typos" in names.
However, if the error could prevent the right person from cashing the bond
at local financial institutions, the bond should be reissued to
correct it. To get this fixed, the bond buyer needs to fill out and sign
Form PD F 5387
to show the correct
registration. Mail the completed form PD F 5387 and the bond(s) to be reissued
to a servicing Federal Reserve Bank.
Incorrect Addresses:
I Bonds don’t need to be reissued to correct the address that appears on the
bonds. The address that appears on savings bonds has no effect on ownership or
the ability of an entitled person to cash the bonds. When cashing bonds,
the person shows his or her correct address in the request
for payment area on the back of the bonds.
Incorrect Social Security Number:
I Bonds don’t need to be reissued to correct the Social Security Number that
appears on the bonds. The Social Security Number on savings bonds is used only
for recordkeeping purposes and has no effect on the ownership or tax liability
of the bonds. When cashing bonds, the person must give his or her Social
Security Number for Federal income tax reporting.
Since we use the Social Security Number for recordkeeping, send us a letter
including (1) the serial numbers, issue dates, denominations, and registration
of the bonds, and (2) the incorrect and correct Social Security Numbers so we
can update our records. This allows us to identify the bonds using the
correct Social Security Number if we ever need to search our records. Send the
letter to:
