Recent Auctions: Notes & Bonds | Secondary Market Rates | E-mail Reports 4-Week Treasury BillInvestors in government securities have a new place to put their money. The U.S. Treasury now offers 4-week bills on a weekly basis. The 4-week bills are available on the commercial market; they aren't sold in TreasuryDirect. Financial institutions, brokers, and dealers sell the securities. As with other Treasury bills, the minimum bid for the 4-week bill is $1,000 and it is sold in multiples of $1,000. Auctions of the new bills are announced on Mondays at 11:30 a.m. Eastern Time and conducted on Tuesdays. Settlement is on the Thursday following each auction, the same day as for other bills offered weekly. The 4-week bills are reopenings of existing 13- and 26-week bills (and thus carry the same CUSIP as the longer-term bills). Though 4-week bills aren't sold in TreasuryDirect, they can be transferred into TreasuryDirect from the commercial market. If you shift a 4-week bill into TreasuryDirect, you can reinvest into available 13- or 26-week bills, but not into another 4-week bill. Due to time constraints, we don't send reinvestment notices to customers holding 4-week bills in TreasuryDirect. If you hold one of the securities in TreasuryDirect and want to reinvest it, you must monitor the maturity date of the bill on your own and reinvest it by calling us at 800-722-2678 and asking for a manual reinvestment. The Treasury Department announced the 4-week bill on July 23, 2001.
