If your bond is lost, stolen, destroyed, mutilated, or not received, we'll
either replace it with a bond bearing the same issue date or we'll pay you its
redemption value (as long as you can give us sufficient information and
evidence to support your claim).
You should keep current and complete records of your savings bond inventory
including bond serial numbers, registrations, and social security numbers, in
a safe place separate from the bonds. This will help us to identify and
replace any missing bonds.
If you discover a record of some HH/H bonds and you're not sure if the bonds
have been cashed or are missing, contact our
office before filing a claim form.
If Your Bond is Lost Before You Receive It
If you complete an exchange application for the exchange of Series EE/E
bonds for Series HH bonds, and you don't receive the HH bonds
within a few weeks, contact the institution where you submitted the exchange.
The institution will find out why you didn't receive your bonds. If the bonds
can't be located, the institution will help you complete a claim form to
request replacement bonds.
If Your Bond is Lost, Stolen, or Destroyed After You Receive It
Even though most bond owners are careful, accidents still happen. Bonds are
sometimes accidentally thrown away after owners take them out to count them.
Unfortunately, bonds are also lost or destroyed as a result of fires, floods,
and thefts. To get a bond replaced:
- complete Form PD F 1048,
describing the missing
bond(s) as fully as possible, and
- mail the form to Bureau of the Public Debt, Parkersburg, WV 26106-1328.
Upon approval of the claim, we'll replace the bonds or pay you for the value
of the bonds.
NOTE: Once you receive replacement bonds or payment for lost bonds,
the original bonds belong to the U.S. Government. If you find bonds after
receiving replacements or payment for them, please return them to us.
