If you can't account for a direct deposit or check payment, read the following:
When Is Interest Due?
HH/H bonds pay interest every six months. The first payment is due six months
from the issue date shown on the bonds. See HH/H
Interest Payment Dates and Rates and Final Maturity Dates to determine
when payments are due on your bonds. Before you report a missing payment,
be sure a payment was due.
Payment By Direct Deposit
If your payments are sent by direct deposit to a financial institution, before
reporting nonreceipt of the payment contact your financial institution for
verification of the deposit. Payments are transmitted to be received by the
first day of the month, so it is possible a payment has been credited during
the last few days of the preceding month. For example, a payment due
February 1 may have been credited to your account the last few days of January.
Check Payment
Some HH/H redemption payments and HH/H interest payments are made by check.
Occasionally a check is lost, stolen, or destroyed. If you're missing a
check issued for the redemption of HH/H bonds, contact the financial
institution you submitted the transaction to for processing. They should
track the payment to determine its status. For missing interest checks,
contact our office as explained below.
How Do I Report a Missing Payment?
Take the following steps in reporting a missing payment.
- Establish that a payment was due.
- If the payment was issued by direct deposit or was for the redemption
of bonds, contact the financial institution involved.
- Once it's established that a payment was due and is missing, notify our
office in writing, providing the date and amount, if known, of the payment.
Also furnish the name and social security number on the account or bonds
involved. The notice must be signed by the owner, co-owner, or authorized
representative.
If you need to send us information, see How to
Contact Us.
What Happens Next?
Once we receive your report of a missing payment, in writing, we'll
research the records to determine the status of the payment. If we find
that a direct deposit payment was deposited, we'll give you that information.
If a check payment was cashed, we'll tell you that information as well.
If a copy of the cashed check is needed, we can provide it upon
request. If the payment hasn't been deposited or the check cashed, the payment
will be replaced. It usually takes 2 - 3 weeks to research our records and
get back to you.
